One of the themes of Atlas Shrugged is that of 'not living for any other person...' One can only ume that Willers' abandonment was punishment for living not for himself, but for Dagny and the company. Any of the other heros of the book would have left the wreck of the train until they could come back and fix it properly. But Willers had become so dependant on the company and what it stood for, that he was unable to see his own self-interest at stake. Afterall, servitude to someone else, regardless of who they are or what they're capable of, is obscene.
Poor Eddie.
