I think that Eddie is the "everyman" in this novel. I think that his fate represents what happens to the "average joe" when the minds of the world quit. The reader likes Eddie, and sympathises with him. We understand what he is going through. Maybe he doesn't have everything figured out- and most of us have been there at some point- but he tries to be good. We are sad when he is left behind on the train, but it brings the lesson to home- the immense value to everyone that is gained by the producers of the world pursuing their own interests. I think it helps the reader understand that hurting the Atlas's of the world hurts everyone.
