To me Eddie is the reader of the novel - he is the cliffhanger. He doesn't die, but he might. He was not born wealthy or prominent, but he had the vision, the work ethic, and the heart; all he lacked was the realization and the choice. I think Rand left it up to us. We all have a choice. We're so close, but will we be able to take the next step? To let go of our old dependencies? I found the ending a great stimulus; a call to action on the part of the reader to make it a happy ending.
