: You ask what is more important, money or the welfare of people. Here is the answer, people of course. Thing is, to improve the welfare of a nation you have to increase the wealth of a nation (see Adam Smith, Wealth Of Nations) by improving the quality and quantity of land, labour and capital and the efficiencies in which they are combined.
: If you want everyone to produce food in the fields and for people to all be equal, then welfare will be decreased for everyone. But, if you want everyone to have more welfare or happiness, then you need free market capitalism and trade.
: So, in effect, Margarets philosophy concerning the welfare of the nation was well founded and beautiful. Its profits and ruthless efficiencies that make a nation rich and thus make it's people better off. Of course there is inequality but that is because of the capital holders profiting from risk which is fundamental to a democratic and prosperous nation.
