This is a Hobson's choice, an irresponsible and specious argument. We're not choosing between people and money, we're choosing to take or leave freedom. Your precious "welfare of the people" is nothing without freedom. A people bound hand and foot by their government is in a pitiable state, regardless of what other measures of their 'welfare' may indicate.
Freedom is morally superior to its opposite--which is slavery, to a greater or lesser degree. It comes at a price, as does anything worth having--and a price I'm willing to pay, with millions of like-minded people, free and unfree. Social and economic heterogeneity is part of that price. And that price is rooted in human nature. Live free or die! Margaret Thatcher understood that.
