Dear Mr. Buckley,
I read your latest column and feel I must correct a grave error you made in criticizing the Roman Catholic Church for not trying to convert the Jews to Catholicism.
It is the duty of the all Catholics to spread the word of God as revealed by Jesus to the Apostles and taught through the authority of the Bishops of the Catholic Church. Your mistake is that the church no longer believes it proper to “target” the Jewish people as in days past. To target them means they are particularly wrong in their beliefs. It is a matter of manners and consideration for the feelings of our fellow man and not an example of “your road to salvation is as good as mine.”
The writings of St. Paul must be taken in the context of the time they were written and applied to the present. The zeal for conversion is no less an obligation to Catholics today than it was in years past but the true meaning of Christian love has changed the tone of these conversion efforts. Examples of Christian love and charity lead to more conversions to Christianity than all the holier than thou proclamations. This method of teaching in no way shows that, “Christians proceed as if Christ had never happened” nor are they, “engaged in emasculating the faith.”
I believe I read somewhere that you were raised a Roman Catholic and if so, I believe your religious education was sadly lacking. I am also very surprised you thought the Holy Mother Church has been emasculated. Rather a poorly constructed metaphor for a man of your reputed writing skills.
